How to make living with a big family easier?
It’s very common in India to have your parents living with you. While it may be tough, it can also be a fulfilling experience. Multigenerational living can be beneficial for everyone involved – for the kids, the parents as well as the grandparents. There is a solid support system in place for all the members of the family. Grandparents are great companions to kids. They can provide that balance when parents focus on disciplining kids. Despite all the perks that come with it, three generations living under one roof is not as simple as it sounds. Here are some tips to make multigenerational living simpler.
1. Have ground rules
A smart rule to have is about what you'll do when you disagree. So, make sure you have some rules about conflict resolution. It also helps to have house rules about food, chores, and curfews.
2. Give each other space
There must be respect for independence and privacy. Make sure all members of the family have a spot they can call their own where they won't be disturbed. This goes a long way in keeping peace.
3. Be kind to one another
It is tempting to criticise the other person. But before you go down that road, think of all the things you love about that person. In fact, you could even tell them why you love them. Remember, positivity is the key word here.
4. Have some exclusive family time
Try and catch up every day. If that is not possible, make sure you do things together at least once a week. This helps keep the bond strong. Go on picnics, go for movies or even take up a class together.
5. Value each other
Living together is often a big blessing. Learn to view it as one. While there are so many people out there who are fighting loneliness, you are the lucky ones who have people around you. Instead of thinking of it as uncomfortable, count your blessings.
